GIS Internship Series - Blog 5

This will be my final entry in the GIS Internship Series, as my time at the Escambia County Marine Resource division is coming to a close. I will be graduating from the University of West Florida on May 7th, with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management and a Minor in Geographic Information Systems. My last class assignment for my internship was to create a portfolio displaying all of my hard work and achievements throughout my time in college. I decided to use the portfolium site and it was pretty straightforward in creating it as it guided me with adding certain sections to make my portfolio stand out. After following the steps in creating my portfolio it was ready to be published. If anyone is interested in looking at my work or achievements, my portfolio can be found here:

GIS Internship Series - Blog 4

In this installment of the GIS internship series, I am going to go over a plan for a GIS day event. The assignment for class this week was to create a plan for a GIS event on GIS day. So I decided to have an event that would be hosted in downtown or a park that is in a public setting, and the target audience is going to be family, friends, co-workers, GIS professionals, etc. The format for this event will be an informal discussion and open house so that people that are interested can learn more about it and people who aren't as interested can still have fun with the event. Here are the events that I decided to have for the benefit and enjoyment of everyone who attends:

  • Have a build your own map workshop
  • Provide maps for a fun treasure map kids could do
  • Have map-based trivia questions for naming countries/locations around the world
  • Give out candy from around the world and have people try to guess where on the map it's from
  • Have local GIS employers come to showcase their business and allow people to apply for jobs

GIS is a growing field that in the future it might be required in any type of environmental job. So, it is more important than ever to introduce GIS to a younger audience because they are the future. On another note, I haven't been doing too much work at my internship and I'm just waiting for the next project. But, I still see the internship I am a part of is such a great opportunity for my future.

Final Project and other maps created

After eight weeks this class has come to its conclusion. Our last task was to come up with a project idea that is geographic and meaningful...
