It has been officially 3 weeks since I have begun work at my internship at the Marine Resources Division in Escambia County. I have already done quite a few GIS projects for them already and I am enjoying every bit of it. The first project they had me do was to fix some sea turtle nest maps that had some nest sites, not in the correct position. The second project I am currently working on is creating artificial reef site boundaries for some sites off the coast. To create these boundaries I need to get the necessary lat/long points by going on the marine resource boat. So I have only made one boundary so far but I will be able to finish the rest soon. One of the days I went to collect my data, afterward, the Marine Resource Chief, Project Manager, another intern, and I went out into Bayou Chico to examine and record boats that are anchored in the middle of the water to see if they are sinking/abandoned or if people are living on them. While we were out in the water, we witnessed a bunch of styrofoam and other garbage floating in the water. So, we spent about 30 minutes picking up as much garbage as we could. It was very sad to see but it felt great being able to do my part in protecting our environment by picking up the trash.
In other news, I have been doing a lot of research towards a career in the GIS field and the internship class is helping me do that by learning from other GIS/Environmental professionals. One professional interview I watched was from Rich Quodomine where he discussed how GIS benefits transportation and infrastructure improvement of Philadelphia. Learning from his experience gave me more insight into a potential GIS career.
Another thing I have been working on that will benefit me in the job search is a LinkedIn account. One assignment for the class was to update my personal account so, I added some more skills that I have such as:
- Cartographic production
- Geodatabase design and creation
- Data editing
- Projections
- GIS analysis
- Geoprocessing
- Metadata implementation
- Model builder
